Neighbourhood Spotlight: Ritchie

Neighbourhood Spotlight: Ritchie

Ritchie is full of character, and it’s not hard to see why it’s regarded as one of Edmonton’s most up-and-coming communities. From the Ritchie Community League website:

“Ritchie is an ideally positioned hub of activity with unmistakable flair. Take a peek under the canopy of our tree-lined streets and you’ll find a sense of neighbourhood pride, contagious community energy and some pretty sweet local spots.”

Steps from Millcreek Ravine and the gorgeous Edmonton river valley trails, and walking distance from amazing local shops, restaurants and parks, there’s something for everyone in this community.

A little history: Established in the early 1890s, Ritchie became a part of our city in 1912 when the City of Strathcona amalgamated with Edmonton, and is named for Robert Ritchie, former Mayor of the City of Strathcona and former owner of the Ritchie Mill.

Did you know? The Ritchie Mill is the oldest surviving flour mill in Alberta! It was constructed in 1892 and still stands today as an office and professional building.

Today, Ritchie is amazingly walkable/cycleable/runnable/skippable (whatever you fancy), and is conveniently situated between Millcreek Ravine and Old Strathcona.

There are fantastic locally-owned shops and restaurants peppered throughout, including the Ritchie Market (which houses Transcend Coffee, Acme Meat Market, Creekside Cyclery, Biera and Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company). When we’re not in the midst of a pandemic, the Blue Chair Cafe offers tasty brunch accompanied by live music.

Did you know? Biera was named Edmonton’s Best Overall Restaurant 2020 by Avenue Edmonton, and head chef, Christine Sandford, interned at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Belgium.

The University of Alberta is in close proximity, and Old Strathcona’s shops, pubs, restaurants, farmer’s market and summer festivals are also only a few minutes away. Ritchie’s central location makes it convenient to travel just about anywhere in the City.

Ritchie has a very active community league which strives to bring the community together. They host amazing events, including a chili cook-off every spring (our personal favourite) and a classic car show in the fall.

Ritchie is amazing for families, with playgrounds, a spray park, a fantastic ice rink, basketball and tennis courts, and schools offering French and Spanish programs.

Ritchie truly has it all, and it’s not hard to see why Accent LOVES building homes here! Click here to see the homes we have available in this vibrant neighbourhood.
